Badges

Badges have been used to identify law enforcement as far back as the Middle Ages. The star shape was based on the pentacle, a mystical symbol believed to have magical powers. However, during the old west, there were no official rules and officers had to make their badges out of whatever was available. This resulted in a variety of shapes and styles.
