How Byrna and PepperBall Pepper Guns Work
Both Byrna and PepperBall are CO2-powered air guns that fire projectiles filled with chemical irritants. When they hit a hard surface, the rounds burst open and disperse the powder inside. Unlike other air guns (which should not be stored with the CO2 cartridge), Byrna launchers do not puncture the cartridge until you take the first shot. This means you can have them ready in case you need them without worrying about CO2 leakage. Once you do puncture the cartridge, you should discard and replace it after you are done shooting. These launchers are effective from up to 60 feet away.
The chemical irritants in the projectiles can cause a range of physical symptoms that help stop would-be attackers and give you time to escape. To practice your accuracy without exposing yourself to the chemicals in the Pepper or Max rounds, you can use Byrna Kinetic ammunition. These are .68 caliber hard plastic projectiles that do not contain any active or inert ingredients.
