While today the term AR-15 has evolved into being a generic term to define a certain style of rifle, it was originally designed in the late 1950s by a company called ArmaLite, Inc. They originally had limited success in marketing this rifle for military use and sold the patent to Colt. The rest is history. Colt took their design and in 1963, when the military hired them to develop a rifle for them, Colt used the AR design. This rifle soon became the standard issue automatic rifle called the M-16 and was used widely in the Vietnam War. The popular design prompted Colt to make a public and law enforcement version which they called the AR-15. Colt’s patent expired in the 1970’s so other manufacturers began using the AR design and while these gunmakers gave their rifles their own names, most owners used the term AR-15.
